Presidential blabbermouth South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the highly disputed Basic Education Laws Amendment Act (BELAA) would be fully implemented even though there was previous obstruction from within the governing coalition of the country.
Dispute resolution leads to consensus
He said that a mechanism set up to resolve disputes in the GNU had reached consensus that BELAA should be fully enacted. This was conveyed by the leaders of parties in the GNU during a meeting of Ramaphosa on Friday.
Presidential Proclamation On Enforcement of Bill
The President also stated that he would issue a Presidential Proclamation to stamp-the-bill into life immediately. Although the law was enacted in September, its full application had been awaiting public consultations on some of the most controversial provisions.
Opposition from the Democratic Alliance
One of the coalition partners, the Democratic Alliance, raised some issues regarding the bill as it would give the department too much authority over vital matters such as determining language policies and admissions criteria at state schools.
