Meaning of earned leave and special leave
Most people do not come to know with a clear distinction between earned and special leaves. When you work in a factory or any institute, then you earn these earned leaves because you work hardly. Usually, earned leave is up to 18 days a year.
When you work in a shop or any other establishment, covered under the Shops and Establishments Act, you will be liable for special leave. These employees can get up to 16 days’ special leave in a year.
You can take advantage of these leaves
One can cash in both earned leave and special leave. If you are left with these leaves, they are carried forward to the next year. An employee can encash leaves for a maximum of 30 days in most companies.
There are companies who pay this amount at the end of the year and some companies pay at the time an employee leaves the company. The amount given for leave encashment varies as per the basic salary and dearness allowance of an employee. If an employee is sacked, he does not get this benefit.
Maternity and Paternity Leave
In India, women employees are entitled to 12 weeks’ leave for confinement, of which not more than 6 weeks can precede the expected date of delivery. Government employees get paternity leave, which is for some time (so to say like on duty).
This leave is not compulsorily required in private companies but some private companies provide this facility only. This leave can be taken within around 6 months of the birth of the baby and can be up to 15 days in general.
Meaning of leave without pay
After you have availed leave for the period of your maximum leave, you can avail leave without pay. That is, you will get no pay for the period of leave, and, eventually, your salary will get reduced.
